Ask any digital nomad about their worst travel day and a dead battery is usually part of the story. A phone at 2% in a city you don’t know, a laptop dying mid-call with a client, a power bank that turned out to be empty — power is the one system in your bag that has no backup. This guide covers how to build a charging setup that simply never fails.
Step 1: replace the charger pile with one GaN brick
Gallium nitride (GaN) chargers pack far more power into far less space than the classic bricks. One 65W GaN charger with two USB-C ports and one USB-A charges a laptop, a phone and earbuds at the same time — and it weighs less than the laptop charger it replaces. If you carry a bigger machine, go 100W. This one swap usually removes three chargers from your bag.
Step 2: choose a power bank you’re allowed to fly with
Airlines cap batteries at 100Wh in carry-on luggage, which in practice means anything up to about 27,000 mAh is fine. The sweet spot for most nomads is 10,000-20,000 mAh: two full phone charges to a full laptop top-up, at a weight you will actually carry. Look for USB-C Power Delivery input so the bank itself refills fast. And adopt the golden rule: the power bank goes back on charge every night, empty or not.
Step 3: cables are infrastructure — buy boring, buy twice
Most “charging problems” are cable problems. Carry two identical short USB-C to USB-C cables (100W rated so they work with everything), plus one USB-C to Lightning if you have Apple devices. Identical cables mean any of them fits any slot in your kit — no untangling, no guessing which one is the fast one.
Step 4: solar, for when the grid isn’t yours
If your travels include camping, long treks or countries with unreliable power, a solar power bank is less a gadget and more an insurance policy. Modern panels won’t fully charge a laptop, but they will keep a phone, a GPS and a headlamp alive indefinitely — which is exactly what you need when things go wrong.
Step 5: the pre-flight ritual
The night before any travel day: everything on charge, power bank included; cables into the tech pouch; charger in the same pocket every time. Boring, repeatable and the reason you will never again beg for an outlet at gate B42.
